Two Gray Families
There are some wonderful old pictures linked to the names below.

As far as I have researched back, I've found no link between George Gray's & Gertrude Gray's  families.

Joseph Mansfield GRAY b.30 June 1833 in Illinois. He lived many years in the town of Trenton, Clinton County Illinois.  He died 20 July 1898 Altamont, Labette Co., KS.

Through the years in the census, his birth year varies by a few years, 1829 - 1833.  His gravestone says "Born June 30, 1829", but in the 1863 to 1864 diary he kept during the Civil War he wrote on June 30th 1863, "J. M. Gray birth day 1833 Soldier 22 months."  Since he was 30 years old at that time, I figure he probably new what year he was born.  So I'm choosing to use the 1833 birth date over the census & gravestone information.

This is very hard to read, but under June 30th Joseph has written his birthday info.

Joseph's parents were born in Virginia according to the census records, but I still don't have proof of their names.  I believe they are the George & Catharine Gray that lived in Clinton County Illinois.  This George Gray died about 1840, but before the census was taken that year.  His wife Catharine (Baber) lived on until 1866.  Catharine and some of her children are buried at the Lake Branch Cemetery. I have photos of that cemetery here on my website.
Joseph served in the 1st Colorado Vol. Cav. Co. M. He enlisted Sept. 17th 1861 & was discharged Oct. 5th 1864 by reason of expiration of term of service, having served 3 years. He was mustered a member of the Oswego, Kansas Post # 150, June 7th 1883.

    In t
he back of her photo her step son George Gray has written "My stepmother, Bobs mother" (Bob is Robert Sutton).

The 1900 census of Labette County Kansas shows M. Agnes Gray's father born in Scotland & mother born in Virginia.  She is shown as the mother of 2 children & both are living in 1900, but only her daughter Agnes E. Gray b. Feb. 1884 in Labette Co., KS. is with her. She had a son with 1st husband Richard Sutton, his name was Robert Sutton nickname 'Bob' b. April 1861 in Illinois. Robert lived in Cherokee Co., KS. with is wife Minnie & children in 1900. Robert & Minnie moved to Rogers Co., OK. by 1910 & had 4 children with them in that census.
